Natasha's Day

Thank you all for your nice comments yesterday and for understanding a girl has a down day now and then. I felt like I was getting sick, which may have contributed to my blue feelings. I wondered if I should go to the group hill run last night and eventually decided to at least get dressed for it. I brought out my favorite running bling...my I'm Tri-ing bibs...
Busted out a few disco moves to get my juices flowing...

...while this guy tried to cheer me up...
...and then I made myself get out the door. The first two laps around the track I was not loving life. I've had this weird pain x3 days that runs from my left ear all the way down to my chest. I thought I was getting sick, but the running was a little scary. I was wearing my HR monitor, though, so although the warm-up felt hard, my HR was normal, so I carried on. We made our way up to the road and ran hill repeats on Terwilliger for a total of about 5+ miles for the night. It was actually a pretty good run. I felt strong but the pain never went away. I downed some nyquil when I got home and I feel better this morning.

As I mentioned yesterday, Natasha - our TNT Tri Team Honored Teammate in '07, '08, and '09 went to Heaven on March 31st, 2009 after a long battle with leukemia. Tonight, her BFF Shannon (one of our teammates) is putting on the 2nd Annual Natasha's Run on the waterfront. We'll be releasing purple balloons (one of two of any little girls favorite colors) into the sky up to her and then running as a very large group.

I wanted to share Shannon's Eulogy today in remembrance of one special and tough little girl. Shannon shared this again this week on her Facebook page.

I just ran across the Eulogy and I wanted to post again because reading it reminded me of so many things...but most of all, to be honest, brave, and kind...and above all...to love unconditionally.
Hello, my name is Shannon Flanagan and Natasha was…is my best friend.  I will never forget the day I met Natasha…I was matched with Natasha through the Children’s Cancer Associations chemopal program.  As I was brought up to Natasha’s hospital room I was overwhelmed with excitement.  I had heard so much about this little 5 year old (at the time) girl and her amazing spirit.  When I walked in the room to meet Natasha and her mother, Natasha said to me,” Hey!  Are you my Chemopal?  I have been waiting for you all day!”  She handed me a hello kitty sucker and said, “I bought you a present…but my mom had to pay for it because I don’t have a job.” I didn’t know then that that day would change my life forever.  Even now, I can’t really remember what I was like before I met Natasha. To be honest, I don’t really want to either.

Just like most of you, I learned from Natasha every day.  I think we can all agree that she had some very special gifts, gifts that she shared with each and every one of us every chance she could.  One of the gifts she shared with me was her ability to be so honest….no matter what the subject.  If she was upset with me…or Gramma….or Aunt Tina…well, we knew it!  She made sure to explain exactly what we did to upset her and what we could do to make it better….like buy her a ds game.  If she felt I needed breath mints she would not hesitate in saying, “Shannon, did you brush your teeth today?  Because if you forgot, you might want to do it now”  As a matter of fact, she sent Gramma to the vending machine to get me a pack of altoids to keep at the hospital for me.  Now that is honesty.   She also gave me very honest dating advice.  You wouldn’t think that an 8 year old would really have any good advice for a 30 something but ….Natasha did.  One evening I was at the hospital with Aunt Tina keeping Natasha company during the time she was having her transplant.  I was filling Aunt Tina in on my most recent dates that I had been on.  I was explaining to Aunt Tina (while Natasha was “sleeping”) that I didn’t really get the feeling that this particular boy wanted to go on another date with me.  Natasha piped up and said, “Well, that’s easy to fix!  Why don’t you try wearing a little makeup?”  You don’t get much more honest than that.

Bravery was another gift that Natasha had and shared with us.  You couldn’t spend more then a few minutes with Natasha without truly and deeply feeling how brave this little girl was.  Even though Natasha was battling Leukemia, taking countless medications every day, she worried most about others.  During one of my phone conversations with Natasha she was filling me in about her day like she usually did and at the end of our conversation; I asked to speak with Gramma…as I usually did.  When Gramma got on the phone I asked her how she was doing, she said, “I am okay but that was quite the scare this morning” I had no idea what she was talking about and Rena said, “Well didn’t Natasha tell you we spent the day in the hospital?  She collapsed and we had to rush her up there, they think it was a minor stroke” I said, “Put her back on the phone please” When I had Natasha again, I said “Muffin (my nickname for her) we talked for over 10 minutes, how come you didn’t tell me you spent the day in the hospital because you collapsed?”  She replied ever so calmly “Well, I just didn’t want you to worry about me”

Most of you know that Natasha spent a good majority of her life up at Doernbecher.  Even though she was missing out on school and sleepovers and other things normal little 8 year olds do, she still had a smile on her face.  To go through what she went through with a smile on her face, fighting cancer for 5 years…was a true testament to her bravery.  She was interviewed on 105.1 the buzz last year and when she was asked if there was anything she wanted people to know about cancer she shared, “Sometimes cancer might kill you, but you have to believe in Miracles”  She was honest and brave in her answer and I will take those qualities with me forever.

She was an honored teammate for the Team in Training Triathlon teams 3 years in a row.  Even though she was tired and not feeling well, she still woke up early and came out to cheer us on in our trainings.  We as teammates pull from this bravery and strength each time we go out to swim, bike or run.  If you ask them, most of them will tell you they could not have crossed the finish line if it wasn’t for Natasha.

Natasha also had the most beautiful gift of all, to love and allow others to love her so unconditionally.  One of my favorite things in the world was to sit back and watch how Natasha was with her sisters.  She loved her sisters so much.  Just the other day I picked up some specialty hot chocolate mixes for her when I was an away on a trip. When I brought them to her the first thing she said was, “Oooooh Marissa would love this raspberry one and I will give Lala the vanilla one.”  They had their moments like all siblings do but the loving bond between these girls was undeniable.  Natasha absolutely loved to love and be loved.

My most favorite memory of all of my Natasha memories was the day I knew that I truly had received this gift of her unconditional love.  We were at the hospital and it was during her stay for the transplant.  Natasha was suffering from horrible headaches and as a result we had to keep the lights off, the TV off, we talked in whispers and she slept and slept.  One afternoon I was with her, I think she had been sleeping for a couple days at this point…no talking or anything.  I was sitting there in the dark with her while she was sleeping…I was coloring pictures for her.  I had been there a couple of hours, just sitting there coloring in the dark.  When out of nowhere I heard her quite little voice say, “Shannon?” I said, “I am here muffin” she said, “I love you” I replied “I love you too.”  I had never before experienced such unconditional love from someone who didn’t “have” to love me, like my parents/siblings. Natasha gave me that gift as I know she did most of you as well.
Speaking of unconditional love, when you look at the Curtis family words can’t begin to describe the amount of unconditional love they all felt for Natasha and Natasha for them.  When it came to Natasha, Lorena, Marissa and Olivia…everything else came second.  The sleepless nights, the all day trips to and from the hospital, the endless chicken nuggets, tortilla’s and rice….not one member of this family complained….because it’s unconditional love and that’s what you do.  Unconditional love is what they taught Natasha and that is how she lived her life…with unconditional love for everyone else.

Today as we celebrate the life of Natasha, we remember the gifts she gave to us.  Those gifts of honesty, bravery, unconditional love and so many more.  Gifts of Courage, Inspiration, devotion and Hope.  We remember these gifts and we will keep them with us in our hearts forever.  Today we remember that we are better people for having had the pleasure to know such a life as Natasha Curtis. When we go out into the world, we will carry her spirit with us and through her we can continue her wish to make the world a better place.  A cancer free place.  Natasha touched so many lives in more ways that I can begin to express here with you today…but you already know that.  She was…..is my very best friend.

Some Days...

...you are thinking about your cousin and can't believe that last summer you were playing with him like when you were kids, that just in December he was making you laugh with his laugh, and now he is gone...

...or that it is two years ago tomorrow that your honored teammate, sweet Natasha, passed away and you know her grandma and her best friend are having a really tough time today...

...or that your newest precious family member might face surgery for a hole in her heart...and she is just so little...

...and you just don't know what to do except let the tears roll down your face.

So you take a day off, you cuddle up on the couch and you read a good book and you are thankful that these amazing children of God have been a part of your life.

Some days...you just cry...
...and that's ok.

B.R.U.T.A.L.

Today's ride was BRUTAL! The schedule called for a 45 mile hill repeat ride. 11 miles out to Larch Mountain, which is slight uphill most of the way. Then 6 miles up Larch - which we thought was where we would hit snow and have to turn around. Then 6 down. 6 back up. 6 down. 11 back to Edgefield for burgers and booze.

I started my morning at 4:45am and by the time I hit the road, I was awake...but needing a little boost. Since we were supposed to try something new again this week in the nutrition area, I decided on a little shot of 5 Hour Energy. I've tried it once before lifting weights and I felt AWESOME but wasn't sure how it would do for cardio. Mostly I was afraid it would tweak me out a bit, but I went for it. I finished it, barfed a little back up in my mouth, and then tasted it for the next 4 hours! Blech!

However, I felt INCREDIBLE on this ride - Very strong up the hills. I don't know if the "juice" had anything to do with it or not, but I would probably try this again. SHAZAM!

At 10.5 miles we reached Portland Women's Forum and this incredible view on nice days...

...however, this was definitely NO nice day. It was cold, dark, windy, and RAINY. Rain that felt like tacks pounding on my face. By the second hill repeat, I was just waiting for mile 34 to register on my bike computer. I thought I would be home free at that point, but that is where it got really bad. It was so cold going down, that some people had to call the sag wagon to pick them up because their hands were so cold they couldn't feel their fingers to use the brakes. After the first group of us were down, they actually called the ride and had some people head on back. The weather was just killing everyone. The first 34 miles finally caught up with me and those last 11 back to Edgefield were pretty nasty. I was having uncontrollable shivers and controlling the bike was problematic.

We did finally make it back and because Edgefield doesn't have bathrooms in their hotel rooms, I was able to sneak into their communal Ladies Lounge for a quick hot shower to briefly warm up and remove some of the mud and grime. Drying off with paper towels was comical. Oh boy - the shivering never completely went away until after the first hot toddy was down. A Wilbur Burger and Tater Tots helped seal the deal.

I'll be back at it next week. For sure. This pushing your limits stuff ROCKS my SOCKS off... on occasion :-)

Mama, Those Shoes Are Sure SEXY

You all might remember I came in First Place in a little race called The Winter Predictor down in Eugene in January. Through that win, I received a free race entry in to this month's Bring In Spring 5k. Since I've never actually done a real 5k, this was very exciting news!
When I came home Wednesday night with these babies... ('cept mine are even MORE purple)

...Mai let out a huge loving sigh and said "Mama, those shoes are sure sexy!" Ya BABY - that's right - I'm bringin' sexy back!

So, the kids and I headed down to Eugene yesterday and had a great visit with Mom & Dad and my bro. I had a couple things on my Eugene agenda. First, I headed out to lunch with Michael's wife, Nicole. I haven't seen her since the funeral and I was hoping we could just lose the kids - her THREE and my two - for a while and just take it easy like two moms need to do every once in a while. She asked where I wanted to go to lunch and I said "anywhere but Mexican - I have a race tonight and I don't want heartburn"...SOOOOO...she said she knew a place that had fantastic drinks and when we pulled up to Ring of FIRE, I doubted her ability to help me get to the race in one piece. She tried to talk me into a JALEPENO Margarita, and after one sip, I almost threw the race out the door, but instead I stuck with white wine and a yummy beef and rice dish.

After lunch we headed over to the hospital to see our cousin Rachel and baby Katelyn. Mama was spending some Kangaroo Care time with baby, so no pictures I can share with you. That baby is absolutely amazing. The whole thing is mind blowing. Seeing her in pictures was one thing, but being up close and in person was beyond incredible. We did snag a diaper, though - so this might help explain just how tiny she is...

...her diaper is the size of the screen on my cell phone!!

After the hospital it was time to get over to Sladden Park for the race. A trip to the Buck's and I was as ready as I would ever be.

Since this was my first 5K, I had no idea how I would do. I wasn't really sure how to pace myself in such a short race but I knew I didn't want to poop out too early.  I told Mom and the kids to expect me back in 30 minutes or less.

They managed to see me at 4 different times during the race and give me high fives...

and raise my spirits as I finished mile one in about 8 minutes!! So much for not starting out too fast.
I came in 4/7 in my age group and 60/130 overall. I averaged 8:50m/m and I do believe I haven't run that fast for that far since training for my marathon in '06. I think I'm bringin' Julie back, too! It felt GRAND!!!!

This was my March run for Run For the Bling of it Challenge. One a month - right on track!

Memphis Mafia

Not much to say about my ride today. It was long. It was windy. It was hungover. It was undernourished. My sitting area thinks 67 miles over two days was a bit much for this early in training.

At about mile 37, I was REALLY hungry, but decided rather than have a gel, I would wait until I got home and would fix myself a nice veggie/fruit and protein packed smoothie or a nice big veggie and turkey stir fry. Instead I arrived home to find this waiting for me...

...it is fried dough with banana chunks and cinnamon sugar covered in a glaze with chocolate frosting, peanut butter, peanuts and chocolate chips on top!

That my friends, is a Memphis Mafia from Voodoo Doughnuts. If you are ever in Portland and do not stop by, you are really missing out.

You will find a line much like this one...

...that wraps around the corner outside of Voodoo on a regular basis.

It is worth the wait.

Although sweet is not my thing, this really did hit the spot today.

Normally I would go for this treasure...

Sweet AND salty, of course.

Fortunately, my family went there without me today and I didn't have to wait in line.
I just had to shovel it in :P

That Hill Ain't Got Nuttin' On Me

  • Alarm goes off at 5:30 in the flippin' a.m. for this Brick workout today.

  • Fall back asleep on the couch while the coffee is brewing.

  • Rouse myself back awake, by pure luck, in time to drink coffee, let coffee do its job, get out to the truck to speed out to the workout before I get left behind by all those fast young triathletes.

  • Wonder why I keep doing this $h!t to myself year after year.

  • Truck is completely frozen over.

  • Break through the ice to get into the truck - finally speed away - arrive at meeting location.

  • Ask for bathroom.

  • Someone nods to the bushes.

  • Make my way to bushes, drop trou, perform a perfect ass to grass squat, piddle, stand up, see people looking at me, look at bushes, realize that someone completely pruned them two feet from the ground up, shuffle to my bike hoping no one noticed it was me. Hey - my eyes were still closed, maybe their's were too.

  • Head out on 24 mile ride - conquer a huge hill. The Olympic team came out early to position themselves all along our hill to cheer us on and even give me an actual push at one point.  I must have been looking pretty rough.
  • In the middle of the big hill, look at my bike computer. I. AM. FREAKING. ROCKING. THIS. THING. 11.2 mph up a flippin' mountain. Look down again. 11.3mph. Look again. 11.5mph. This hill ain't got nuttin' on me! I am STEADY!

  • Realize I'm looking at the odometer.

  • Turn to the trail putty and wish I had some booze. Glad I added the chocolate chips.
  • Return to transition area. Screw the landscaping, those bushes still looked pretty inviting. Did my business.

  • 5 mile run is slow. I never got into a real groove. My left glute has been bugging me and that in turn started to cause some left knee problems, which started to cause some mental problems so when I arrived home, I had my peeps draw me an ice bath and some hot tea so I could sit and stew for awhile.

  • 20 Minutes later I was renewed. Took me an hour to stop my teeth from chattering and then I celebrated the heat returning to my body by getting an icecream cone at the coffee shop.

The alarm goes off.
Just a few minutes more.
My nose is stuffed.
My calves are sore.

It’s cold outside
It looks like rain.
There’s work to do.
Who needs to train?

There’s no clean clothes.
There might be ice.
Can’t find my gloves.
My bed sounds nice.

I brush my teeth.
Pull on my shoes.
The doorbell rings.
No time to shmooze.

I greet my friend.
I start my watch.
A slow warm-up.
Take it up a notch.

We hit the hills.
We’re halfway done.
Then I recall…
…that this is fun!
  • Remembered why I keep doing this $h!t.

Pain In The Butt

Spring Break started today and so I promised Mai she could do some runs with me over the next week. I had a 6 miler on the schedule today, so she and Ki joined me for the first two. I couldn't keep up with her. It's annoying to have her running backwards talking to me and encouraging me.
Just look how fast those two are up there. The camera couldn't even catch them being still!

After we got home, I hopped on the treadmill for my final miles but only barely busted out another 3 before giving up. My butt hurt. Bad.
At our first track workout last week, Coach Glen said that if we had any injuries, doing track workouts would only exacerbate them and that we should not do them. I thought to myself, "I should mention my butt." Then I promptly did the workout anyways. Then I did another one this Wednesday...and now my butt really hurts. I had thought it was improving, but now I'm not so sure. So I came up one mile short today, but I figure I've got two big workouts on the schedule this weekend ~ A 30/5 Brick tomorrow and a 45 mile ride on Sunday so I would rather go in as fresh as possible.

We just came back from a huge burrito lunch at Iron Horse in Sellwood and since I'm too stuffed to work out, I'm going to get some video of Mai using our new Bosu Ball that came yesterday, courtesy of CSN. I will tell you that she has already mastered hula hooping and jump roping while balanced on it. I can almost stand on it with both feet for a full 5 seconds. Go me!

Ten Rules I Broke...

that made my special day perfectly imperfect. Beth posted her list and I share some of her list - like not flossing. Although I don't just do it once a month. I do it only after I've eaten corn on the cob...so pretty much summertime is when I floss.

Today I'm going to share the Ten Rules I Broke On My Wedding Day.

1. The bride wears white. I wore blue...

2....which turned out beneficial when I spilled a glass of red wine all over myself after I had too many glasses of wine and tried to dance while drinking red wine. It was still a red stain, but looked much less dramatic than if I had been wearing virginal white. Um...this rule is...um...don't drink too much damn wine at your wedding. Your memories will be fuzzy.

3. Share a first kiss after the judge pronounces you man & wife. We hugged instead...
Check out my MIL in the blue behind us. some pre-wedding libations...some during wedding libations...giving away her baby boy...it was all just too much. Check out the sunglasses to hide the tears. That face, though!! She can't fool us...we know what's going on under there :D

4. Don't french kiss at your wedding - it's gross!!
Ok fine...we kissed, too... Look at him going after that!
Look at my Father-In-Law right behind husband's head. So disapproving of such PDAs. My dad on the far right is clapping, but he can't bring himself to actually watch this spectacle. My pretty mom in the red....she's ALL for it :D

5. Hire a professional photographer.
Completely unnecessary....look at these great pics I found in my wedding album...

6. Expect your guests to behave.
If you're going to serve massive amounts of booze, don't expect the ladies to act very ladylike...

I don't know what she's doing, but I know what he's looking at!

7. Have a beautiful and elegant "wedding cake". We made sure there was the right cake for everyone!

8.Think your mother-in-law is going to let go of him easily...

...there's that face again. I ADORE my Mother-In-Law, by the way. She is THE best!

9. Expect that the women will quit hitting on him now that he's wearing a ring on his finger.

10. Require shoes. Why...that is just no fun at all.
We actually had people who brought more comfortable clothes to change into for dancing :-)
Because as you can see, this was a very formal event and their "good" clothes were just too stiff and uptight. Seriously...best wedding ever!

It Has Been 5 Days Since...

my last workout. This could trouble me, but it doesn't.

In previous years I would have fought to come back too early from an illness and prolonged the agony for an extra 2 weeks and had a bunch of junk miles of swimming, running and biking. OR I would let a 5 day break head me face first into a bunch of trail putty......but without ever actually hitting any trails...

...and would totally forget working out altogether for a good month or so.

But not this time!  I knew I needed at least one more day to recoup and so I cancelled today's swim. I did, however, mix up some trail putty for my ride this weekend. I think before I freeze them, I will buy some chocolate chips tonight and mix them in (YUM!)

Trail Putty:
½ cup of peanut butter (or almond butter YUM!)
2 tablespoons of honey
2 ½ tablespoons of non-fat powdered milk
½ cup of raisins (or chocolate chips YUM!)
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and then roll into a log. Coat the log (I said log again, hehe) with coconut or grated chocolate. Chill logs in the fridge and then wrap in plastic.

I love tossing a couple logs in the pocket for long rides or run or hikes. I like asking people if they would like a bite of my log. I'm friendly that way.

Now that the chills, high fever and achy body symptoms are wrapping it up, I finally took care of getting my forced my husband to hang my Allied Medal Display up on the wall in my office. Doesn't it look nice?

They were a great company to work with. This was a giveaway I won, so I wasn't even a paying customer, and they got the product out to my doorstep the day after I ordered it. WOW!

I leave you with a picture of something absolutely amazing. My cousin had her baby girl, Katelyn, last night. She is quite early. She is smaller than your hand and weighs only 1 pound and 6 oz. This is her Daddy's ring on her hand. Please keep her in your prayers.

Foolin' Myself and A CSN GIVEAWAY

I don't like to clean.
I have two kids.
A dog.
A man.

Rather than aim my gaze downward and happen to see this reminder of the plant that died and was removed over a month ago...

Or, the dining room that has become Lego town (and yes, now that you mention it, I do notice that there are Christmas ornament hangers still out and it is half way through March)...

Or, this fiasco that happened after Daddy told Mai no skating on the hardwoods and I moved her into the living room carpet where she could really not get into any trouble (yes, I moved the couch over 6" and now I only have to see this when I'm going up and down the stairs)...

So...maybe I prefer to fool myself a bit and keep my gaze towards the ceiling. Have you ever noticed how much cleaner your house is if you lie on the floor and look up? UH.MAE.ZING.

Unless you wander into my office.
Then you'll look upwards and you'll see this

or if I turn it the other way, this....

So when I won Miss Zippy's CSN giveaway, I'm sure you were thinking I would go directly to their LIGHTING  department and replace this very ugly and fire hazardous lamp with something new.
But you would be wrong.
I went directly to their health and fitness area and bought a BOSU ball because as you can see, there is still room in my workout closet for one more thing :D

I'm teaming up with CSNStores.com to offer one of you lucky readers $35 to use at any of their online stores!  This is for my US and Canadian readers only, and  there may be international shipping fees in the case of Canadian orders that the gift code cannot cover.

Mandatory: I'm going to make it easy to enter:  Be or become a follower and leave a comment saying so.

Extra entries:  (leave a separate comment for each)

Extra entry #2, #3, #4- Blog, Facebook, or Tweet about the giveaway and leave me the link in your comment.

Extra entry #5 - Tell me, if a friend or acquaintance showed up on your doorstep unannounced, how would they find your house kept? Or would you be like me and think twice about letting them in ;-)

This giveaway is open until Monday March  21st at midnight PST.  I'll announce the winner next Tuesday!
Good luck!

The Best Laid Plans

This was to be a weekend of fun events and fantastic workouts. We had the big bowling party tonight, a 35 mile hilly ride tomorrow with a potluck after wards and then The Shamrock 15k on Sunday. As I previously griped, I was already feeling pretty yucky at Wednesday's track w/o, then yesterday I had some major trouble at the pool. I finished all 3200 yards, but constantly coming up for air and not being able to take anything in due to throat snot did not make for a pretty swim. By the time the 6th graders finished whooping up on the teachers at the PTA basketball game last night, I knew I was done for.

Today I just feel like poop, so I'm calling this weekend a wash. Besides, look who joined me in my misery today...

Before, he just had his sock clutched in his right hand to comfort him....

...now he has a blanket. He's passed out cold. Poor kid.

My hope is he'll wake up feeling better and we can cuddle the weekend away.
