Steve and the kids and I went out to cheer on Steve's sister in her first 50 mile race yesterday at The Autumn Leaves at Champoeg Park.
As we were holding up our signs in anticipation of seeing her come around the corner...
...we got lots of smiles and thanks from the other runners and it made my wonder why there weren't more fans out cheering for their people?? It's 50 freaking miles!
I've run across this kind of apathy from people before...maybe more of a non-knowledge of what it takes to get out there and do something so physical - not just the physical part of what it takes but the mental part, too.
It's a huge feat to get out off your butt and do events like this 50 miler or to do a 5k or a full Ironman or a sprint triathlon.
Next time you hear about a friend or family member planning a sporting event - Get out there and support them. You'll feel awesome being around so many healthy and strong willed people and you'll have a special place in the heart of your athlete, who may not even be able to give you much more than a painful grimace, but will TOTALLY appreciate your effort!

Well said. I am really glad you and the family made it out. I knew that I wasn't going to be able to stop and talk, but just seeing you for those brief moments, made a huge difference, especially those posters you made up.
