Because My Daughter Is Watching

Yesterday was to be my first track day of Run Less Run Faster and so I figured the more the merrier and invited the wee girl to go along. After a mile warm-up and some dynamic stretching, I started my 12x400s. According to the pace chart based on my recent (and only) 5k in March, I was to be doing my 400s in 2:04. My first 400 was about 1:45, the second 1:47...and on and on. When I've previously done track workouts I've used my HR monitor or gone on feel rather than actually paying attention to my times. I'm NOT a #s person...
However, I was intent on doing this right. But again...I'm not a #s person and looking up things on charts and stuff is not my strong suit, so I could possibly have been looking at an entirely wrong chart, but it was a great workout nonetheless. Half way through Mai wanted me to time her doing a 400 followed by stairs. She had been running laps, running stairs, and running up a grassy hill during my whole workout. This girl was making the peewee football camp boys look like wimps. They all kept staring at her like she was a maniac...which she is :D

My 2nd half, I finally got into a groove and hit my 2:04 pace within a second or two every time. Yay me! It sure felt better than the 1:45s I had run for the first 6 400s.

So here's the thing. I started having some pretty terrific left ?IT Band? trouble on the drive to Sunriver. I've had continuing trouble with it, my left glute, my left hammie, my left ankle since then. I have had manageable trouble with my left side all season actually. My right leg feels FANTASTIC...my left leg feels not so great. During my workout it didn't really bother me after I got started, but boy...after the workout, I had some serious achiness until I went to bed. Today it feels better, but not great.
I'm playing this by ear for now...not sure what to do.

So, I'm wondering...What do YOU do because your daughter (or son) is watching you?

I think you did 400s, and very well I might add.

That's awesome!

I'm starting to realize that my daughter and son watch me all the time. The other day my (almost 3 year old) daughter was doing a couple of my post running stretches - which I don't even usually do while she's around. I must have at some point though. She informed me that she was "stretching".

My (4 year old) son is constantly wanting to run and bike, particularly after I have done it.

Look at her! So many kids give up so easily and she is rocking it! I love it when she says, that's good, right with a big smile on her face.

Such a great example for your daughter! That's the kind of stuff that makes them runners later on in life.

Be careful with the ITB. Go to this site and look at his video on it to see if you can find some trigger points to work on: www.sock-doc.com.

I don't have a son or daughter yet, but I had a pretty incredible experience at a race last summer.

It was a twelve-hour adventure race that I was doing with two other women, on the heels of being terribly sick in Ecuador (like, losing-ten-pounds-off-my-5'2"-113-pound-body sick). I was well-trained but seriously rundown, and just felt crummy the entire day. We crossed the finish line and I was about ready to keel over when a woman came up to me with a six-year-old girl trailing behind. "My daughter is too shy to tell you this," she said, "but she thinks what you three are doing is just fantastic. It's amazing to see three girls out there doing these races. What an inspiration." With that, the little girl walked over and gave us each a necklace of mardi gras beads. We all wore them in our team photo on the podium.

I think she was about as inspiring for me that day as we apparently were for her.

It's too early in my track training for me to even imagine doing 12. But you KILLED.

What do I do.. I'm very careful to be a modest, polite, example to her. That being said I fall down more times than I get up.

Nice job on the 400s and way to be a rocking example to your daughter! :)

Sounds like ITB but whatever, be careful! In this whole huge ordeal of my stupid heel, I learned one thing: We all have imbalances. Would be great if you found out if you have weaknesses on that side and get some exercises to do to strengthen them (from a PT!).

My IT band was killing me for close to 2 months after the Eugene Half. Seems the IT band is better (knock on wood), but now the stiffness is in my left glute. Oh well, I'd take that over my knee!

When my daughters are watching I.... let me think .... I try not to drop food on the floor? (My children are a cat and a dog.)

can’t wait to see your results with RLRF too!! i don’t have kids..but I try and set an example for my friends that don’t work out and take care of themselves.

Well done on the 400's and so cool your daughter wants to be like mom! I try to have a good attitude and be positive about things I do, even the ones I don't like. My kids think it is goofy when I say (just about everyday when they gripe about going to school) "make today the best you can make it, that's what I'm going to do".

I was going to say something similar to Jill... if it is only one side then probably an imbalance or out of alignment. Get checked out for these things before it escalates. Hope it is easily and quickly resolved :)

I need a book written, maybe "Run Less, Run Farther" or "Run Less, Run Pain Free"

Nice job on the 400's

GREAT workout! I am ready to be done tri training so I can hit up a track. Whenever Wes is watching I act as goofy as possible! I randomly bust out dancing or singing and making faces while I do it!

I always tell my daughter that I had fun, regardless of the outcome, but I can't figure out why she swears so much.
