Fast Girls

Had a nice night last night meeting with a new running group. The Fast Girls are working towards a 4 hour marathon in 4 months. Actually only 3 months because the race some are doing is in early Feb. There was someone there who has never run before. Someone who has only done 5 and 10ks and most everyone else has done 2 or more marathons. Sherrie's done 21!! Such a great group of ladies!

Of the 5 TNT peeps there, I was the only one that did not go on to do a full IM this year. Same training, same backgrounds, same approx age - made me start to wonder why I haven't gotten the bug like they did...oh ya...kids! IM is SUCH a commitment! I can't blame the kids for all of it though - the fitness level needed to do even the 1/2s has eluded me these last two years. Of all the TNTers there, none are going back to TNT this year and no one knew of any 1/2IM alum that are returning. The Coeur d'Alane IM is the same weekend as Pac Crest and also, I think many are taking a break from fund raising as most of us have done multiple years in a row. In a way it made me sad that we're not all able to fund raise again this year, but in another way it made me happy because that means that I'll have people to train with.

So my plan over the next months and the start of tri season is to get my legs healthy, concentrate on getting my mileage up to at least 15 mile long runs again and work on speed. I think I'll try some shorter tris this year and maybe save the 1/2 irons until late in the season or for next year (meaning 2011) altogether. This is, of course, all subject to change as friendly enthusiasm rubs off on me, but really, I just want to concentrate on getting healed and getting faster this season.

Today Jack Canfield wants me to take care of unpaid debts. I have one personal credit card that drives Steve nutso that I keep a balance on it. This in turn drives me nuts....So I guess the best thing is to just get it paid off and not use it anymore. I've cancelled it and should have it paid off next month. Well, that was simple...guess I can try to get some unfinished business from day 1 done today.

I've contemplated doing a 1/2 IM... I got into the sport because of my own curiosity of what a friend was doing... so she asked if I'd take her down town Chicago at 3am to rack her bike as she was doing her first OLY distance... yeah, bad move on my part :o) - I knew my cries of 'but I can't swim' would go right out the water when I saw two amputees coming up the finish path... 1st was a woman with one leg amputated.. my run club buddy said 'she did Hawaii IM and finished' few more go by here comes a gentleman with both legs amputated... run club buddy nudges me again... ok ok so I can't swim I guess I'm gonna learn.. so when my friend came in and I told her OK this was pretty darn cool and you knew getting me here would encourage me to try it.. so I'm ready to try it.. That was summer 06, learned over the winter of 06 to swim, did my first tri's in 07, sprints... in 08 I stepped up to OLY, now I'm kinda itching to do a 1/2 IM...

Kim ~ Wish I had advice for the debt. We've been lucky to have a successful business these last 10 years and a husband that is quite frugal. As we're facing stark financial times right now, it is so empowering to know that we have no credit card debt. We've got our mortgage and a car payment, but other than that we're looking good. I'm so thankful Steve has taken such good care of us - we would be in big trouble if it had been left up to me...

I remember reading about you and Robin and your tri experiences back then and wondering if I could ever do one :o)
I kind of went about it backwards, though. Started with the 1/2s and never really gave sprints or olys a try. I'm thinking that Olys will be a happier distance for me, but I'm not giving up on 1/2s just yet ;o)
